September 11th,2001 was a terrible day for all Americans, but that day also means something totally different to Ann and I. It was the day we first met with an adoption agency to discuss the different types of adoptions and the process. I remember sitting at work, as the horrors of that day developed, wondering if we should keep that appointment or if the agency would even be open by that night. I remember Ann and I saying we are still going, and hopefully they will still have the meeting. I remember as we drove to the agency, the scene of cars lined up trying to get gas as if the world's oil supply dried up. It was total chaos even in the outskirts of Grand Rapids. The meeting did happen and a few families did cancel but for the few of us at this meeting this day meant so much more to us. It opened our eyes and hearts to this treasure we call adoption. After the meeting our emotions were so overwhelming, the excitement we felt of wanting to get started with the adoption process and the horror of TV coverage that we went home to see.
Yes, that day was one of the worst days in America and we can't forget those who were its victims but for Ann and I it was perhaps the most encouraging day for our hopes of a family. That's the way we want to remember September 11th, 2001.
